TolHorse Studios

Emma Martinson graduated from Lawrence University in 2009 with a degree in English and a minor in music (emphasis on theory/composition).

Emma's passion for photography started alongside her passion for riding horses when she was 12 years old. She participated in photography through 4-H, and took her first photography classes as a senior in high school, using her own Pentax ZX-30 SLR. Her photography centered around horses until she entered college. She began shooting with a Pentax K10D D-SLR and Lensbaby lenses before taking two photography courses in college, under the instruction of photographers J. Shimon & J. Lindemann, who furthered her love of the darkroom and introduced her to photographic theory, view cameras, pinhole box cameras, cyanotype, and her favorite medium format camera, the Hasselblad.

Currently without a darkroom, Emma's photography is largely a passionate hobby, though she works for clients whenever possible. Her favorite tools include her D-SLR, Adobe Lightroom, and family of Lensbabies: 2.0 lens, Composer lens, and optic swap system.

Outside photography, Emma was an avid equestrian, competing and training in dressage and jumping with her horse Toler, TolHorse Studios' namesake, until his passing in 2013. Emma also writes novel-length fiction (literary, magic-realism, and fantasy) as well as the occasional poem or piece of short fiction. Other hobbies include training longsword and dueling sabre in Historical European Martial Arts, painting, musical composition, and reading as much as possible.
